| Ellis Street Apartments
We know from experience that the most effective way to bring an individual
in off the streets is to provide housing and a full range of services in
a single location. This is known as supportive housing. With
supportive housing, the programs people need to address the causes of their
homelessness are delivered in the same place where they live.
Larkin Street Youth Services, through a partnership with Tenderloin Neighborhood
Development Corporation (TNDC), offers supportive housing to homeless youth
and young adults, ages 18 – 24, at our Ellis Street Apartments. The
young people live in the Ellis Street apartment building’s 24 studio
units, 6 of which are reserved for youth diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
Kids, like adults, are more likely to participate in programs that are
easily accessible. At the Ellis Street Apartments, case management
is on-site. Off-site but nearby are educational opportunities and
employment training through Larkin Street’s Hire Up center, medical
care, HIV services, and positive recreation activities.
The Ellis Street Apartments offer young people normal city apartment life
enhanced with the help that they need to maintain permanent housing. The
result is a program in which residents experience self-sufficiency while
receiving the support necessary to maintain it.
