GED / High School

When you’re homeless, you have greater concerns than how to get to high school every day. You can’t do your homework if you have no safe place to study. You can’t get to class on time if you haven’t slept or eaten. If you’re on the streets to escape chaos at home, you were probably behind academically even when you had a place to stay. You may suffer from learning disabilities, and found high school to be a difficult, alienating experience. Everything, including your education, is interrupted when you’re forced onto the streets. When you finally come in from the cold, you’re going to have some catching up to do.

Participants in any Larkin Street program have the opportunity to resume their education by attending our accredited on-site school and working toward their high school diploma or GED (high school equivalency). Our school (operated in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District) meets daily to provide project-based learning opportunities that incorporate such core elements as math, English, social studies, and science. Youth may earn credit in these core areas while re-engaging with the academic process, all the while working with our education staff to reconnect to a school that suits their needs. One on one afternoon tutoring is available to youth to overcome any academic hurdle they may encounter.

Our GED program also combines small group and individual instruction to help prepare youth for the five-part GED test. Classes and drop-in tutoring are available each weekday during both daytime and evening hours. To help overcome anxiety about the test, our GED instructors facilitate a weekly fieldtrip to the local testing site to make youth more comfortable with the process.

Completion of high school or high school equivalency is a crucial part of many of our clients’ service plans. Students come to trust their teachers and each other, developing an ongoing support system as they work at their own pace to build a strong academic base that will serve them well on their journey toward stable adulthood.

  • More than 100 youth enroll in our on-site school each year.
