GED / High School
When you’re homeless you have greater concerns than how to get to
high school every day. You can’t do your homework if you have
no safe place to study. You can’t get to class on time if you
haven’t slept or eaten. If you’re on the streets to escape
chaos at home, you were probably behind academically even when you had
a place to stay. Everything, including your education, is interrupted
when you’re forced onto the streets. When you finally come in
from the cold, you’re going to have some catching up to do.
Participants in any LSYS program have the opportunity to resume their education
by attending our accredited on-site school and working toward their high
school diploma or GED (high school equivalency). School meets every
weekday from 10:30 to 4:30. In the mornings, patient and nonjudgmental
teachers guide small groups of kids in core classes such as math, science,
English, history, and social studies. In the afternoons, students
work independently toward individual educational goals with the benefit
of one-on-one tutoring, GED preparation curricula, test preparedness and
English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction. Writer’s workshops
and math labs give students more opportunities throughout the week to develop
their skills.
Completion of high school or high school equivalency is a crucial part
of many of our clients’ service plans. Students come to trust
their teachers and each other, developing an ongoing support system as they
work at their own pace to build the strong academic base which will serve
them well as they continue their journeys toward stable adulthood.
- Over 60 youth were enrolled in our on-site school last year.
- Larkin Street helped 20 youth to obtain their GED or high school diploma last year.
