HIRE Access
Larkin Street Youth Services’ HIRE UP employment and education iniative
includes a variety of components to encourage kids to finish high school,
gain valuable job skills and learn to be self sufficient. We also
recognize that in today’s world post-secondary education is crucial
to serious career development as young people move toward rewarding and
productive adult lives. HIRE UP therefore includes HIRE Access,
an educational program that demystifies the college application process
and helps youth pursue post-secondary educational goals.
Through HIRE Access, LSYS clients who have received their high school
diploma or GED are given academic counseling and assistance in all aspects
of finding and attending the college of their choice. Our counselors
are experts in the specific issues that formerly homeless young adults
need to take into account when they are negotiating school fees and building
educational plans. HIRE Access staff and volunteers take youth on
tours of San Francisco State University, University of California, San
Francisco and City College of San Francisco. They assist the program
participants with applications and financial aid forms. The young
people also support each other with quarterly meetings between current
HIRE Access students and former Larkin Street youth who are now in
college themselves.
When kids have been neglected or rejected by family, they haven’t
had the benefit of educational role models. If they have been consumed
with merely surviving the pain of life on the streets, they have not had
the luxury of considering all their options for pursuing an education. HIRE
Access gives them back those lost opportunities and allows young people
to finally fulfill their academic potential.
- Larkin Street helped more than 90 youth enroll in post-secondary
education through HIRE Access last year.
