Job Readiness Class

Larkin Street Youth Services’ comprehensive set of education and employment services, HIRE UP, provides a variety of programs aligned with the diverse needs of the kids we serve. For those who are not yet ready to find jobs or begin careers, HIRE UP offers the Job Readiness Class (JRC).

JRC helps kids explore career possibilities and set employment goals for the future. They receive counseling and help formulating specific plans for economic stability. With the help of Larkin Street staff, young people gain the skills they need to be successful in the workplace. The JRC curriculum includes résumé writing, mock interviews, and other pre-employment skills required for a successful job search. Staff also invite guest speakers to help expand the kids’ perspective about what they can do with their lives. Larkin Street’s housing and health services provide for their immediate needs for shelter and safety, while employment services like JRC open their eyes to the possibilities in their futures.

Job Readiness Class graduates have gone on to pursue a variety of paths. One recent graduate turned an informational interview into an opportunity to pursue a career in journalism, so impressing the staff of Asian Week that they hired him as an Assistant Intern. Another fulfilled her ambition to work toward a career in computer animation, moving from Job Readiness Class to multimedia training to a college education in her chosen field. One local employer, Glass Block Designs, has already hired four graduates of the Job Readiness Class: a ringing endorsement of both the effectiveness of the program and the motivation of our hardworking youth.

By the time they are of an age to enter the workforce, we want these young people to be ready for self-sufficiency. Job Readiness Class is their first step toward careful planning for the course of their productive adult lives.
  • Because of employment programs at Larkin Street like JRC, more than 100 youth each year are placed in jobs where they make a living wage.
