Jake grew up with a mom who had serious mental health issues that were not addressed.  Shortly before his 18th birthday, Jake and his mom lost their housing, and he found himself on his own. With caring support from staff at Larkin Street, Jake focused on finishing high school and applying to college while staying at Diamond Youth Shelter, and later, Avenues to Independence. Through HIRE UP’s HIRE Access program, Jake visited several college campuses and obtained assistance with the application and financial aid process. In the fall of 2004, Jake began his first year at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he continues to study today.
